9 essential events of the Design Canberra Festival

1. Bio Mimic, Opening event – ANCA Dickson

Bio Mimic showcases works exploring the themes of biomimesis and vessels. Biomimesis is a design practice that explores construction methods and systems of biological life.

2. Coming from the Six – Garema Place

Coming from the Six is a furniture and sculpture exhibition showcasing recent work from Rolf Barfoed, Nick Harper, Sam Ryrie, Pete Bollington and Elliot Bastianon.

3. Design You Can Drink – Brew Nation

Join architects, designers and entrepreneurs in a discussion about the intersection of quality, modern design and the ACT’s burgeoning craft alcohol industry. Local designer Jing Ling Chua reveals the tightrope process of balancing design sensibility against the mass appeal required of beer branding packaging.

4. New Terrain In An Old World, floor talk and opening – Craft ACT

Zoë Veness will discuss the new body of work developed for her solo exhibition New Terrain in an Old World, which is currently showing at Craft ACT as part of Women in Design.

5. Modernist Public Art Walking Tour – Meeting at the Law Courts

Join Canberra Museum + Gallery Senior Curator, Deborah Clark on a guided tour of Canberra Modernist Public Art. The tour kicks off from outside of the Law Courts where you can enjoy a glass of wine from award-winning architectural pop-up wine bar, the Pop Inn accompanied by local music featuring Evan Buckley and Beth Monzo.

6. You You: Ceramic works from Kyoto

You You features the work of Japanese ceramicists who, having studied ceramics at university in Kyoto, now pursue their art under the tutelage of Japanese ceramicist Ryozo Shibata.

7. Living Room, week two, women in design

Architecture + design + craft = an open home with a difference. Explore the living rooms of acclaimed Canberra houses designed by female architects, and discover pop-up exhibitions with works on sale by local artists, makers and craft practitioners.

8. Everyday Beautiful – Canberra Centre

Celebrate beautiful and original design you can enjoy in your own home every day. See contemporary design by some of Canberra’s most exciting designers, from F!NK & Co’s iconic jugs and stunning lighting range, Alison Jackson’s popular tableware and jewellery, Zoe Brand’s conceptual jewellery, to Megan Stewart’s custom-made and wearable smectacles.

9. Bicycle Design – New Acton

Thomas Hume’s Roadie Bike Boxes

An exhibition of beautiful handcrafted bicycle design – elegant and sculptural. Fikas bikes are locally designed and hand-built with great care in Queanbeyan by Luke Laffan.
